Transform Your Samsung Galaxy into a Productivity Powerhouse with Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is reshaping how we interact with our smartphones, and Samsung Galaxy users can now harness this AI-powered assistant as their primary digital companion. With over 50 million Android installs worldwide, Copilot offers a compelling alternative to traditional assistants like Bixby and Google Assistant.

Setting up Copilot as your default digital assistant unlocks advanced productivity features that integrate seamlessly with Microsoft's suite of services. The process is straightforward, but the impact on your daily workflow can be transformative.

Step-by-Step Setup and Activation

Getting Microsoft Copilot running as your default assistant requires navigating through your Galaxy device's settings. First, ensure you've downloaded the Copilot app from the Google Play Store.

Open your Settings app and tap on 'Apps'. Navigate to 'Choose default apps', then select 'Digital assistant app'. You'll see this option appear twice in the menu hierarchy, so tap it again on the subsequent page.

From the available options, select Copilot and confirm your choice. A warning dialogue will appear explaining the change, which you'll need to accept to complete the setup.

Once configured, activating Copilot requires a swipe gesture from the bottom corners of your screen. This method works across all apps, providing consistent access to your AI assistant regardless of what you're doing. The power button long-press remains exclusive to Bixby on Samsung devices, though you can rebind the double-press power button shortcut to launch Copilot instead.

By The Numbers

  • Microsoft Copilot has 33 million active users across all platforms as of 2026
  • Over 50 million Android installs have been recorded since its November 2023 launch
  • Daily active users increased 10 times year-over-year, with conversations per user doubling
  • Only 3.3% of Microsoft 365 users pay for the premium $30/month Copilot subscription
  • Microsoft reports 15 million paid Copilot seats with 160% year-over-year growth

Core Productivity Features and Capabilities

Microsoft Copilot brings enterprise-grade AI capabilities to your pocket. The assistant excels at email composition, calendar management, and document creation tasks that integrate with Microsoft's cloud services.

Smart scheduling becomes effortless as Copilot can parse natural language requests and suggest optimal meeting times. Task management features help maintain productivity momentum, whilst intelligent suggestions adapt to your daily patterns and preferences.

"Copilot is becoming a true daily habit, with daily active users up tenfold year-over-year and average conversations per user doubled." , Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft

The deep integration with Microsoft 365 services sets Copilot apart from competitors. Users can revolutionise their spreadsheet workflows and access the same AI capabilities available in desktop applications. For professionals already invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, Copilot's productivity features create seamless workflows across devices.

Samsung's Multi-Assistant Strategy

Samsung Galaxy devices are experiencing a significant AI upgrade cycle. Older Galaxy devices are receiving AI enhancements that complement third-party assistants like Copilot, while Samsung has pledged AI integration across all devices by 2026.

The company's approach demonstrates flexibility in AI partnerships. Regional variations influence Samsung's strategy, with different AI providers serving various markets based on local preferences and regulatory requirements.

"Performance, reliability, and user experience, above all else are our refocused 2026 priorities for Windows." , Pavan Davuluri, President, Windows and Devices Group, Microsoft

This multi-assistant philosophy positions Galaxy devices as flexible platforms rather than locked ecosystems, allowing users to choose AI tools that best fit their workflows and preferences.

Optimising Your Copilot Experience

Maximising Copilot's potential requires thoughtful configuration and regular interaction. Consider these essential optimisation steps:

  • Connect your Microsoft account during initial setup to unlock cross-device synchronisation and advanced features
  • Customise notification preferences to balance helpfulness with discretion, especially in professional environments
  • Explore voice command capabilities for hands-free operation during commutes or multitasking scenarios
  • Enable location services selectively to receive contextual suggestions without compromising privacy
  • Regular app updates ensure access to new features and improved performance capabilities

The learning curve varies by user, but consistent daily interaction accelerates familiarity and effectiveness. Understanding how different AI models handle various tasks can also improve your overall experience with Microsoft Copilot's Claude models integration.

Can I use Copilot alongside Bixby on my Samsung Galaxy device?

Yes, you can have both assistants installed simultaneously. However, only one can serve as the default digital assistant. You can access the non-default assistant by opening its app directly or using specific gestures.

Does Microsoft Copilot work offline on Samsung Galaxy devices?

Copilot requires an internet connection for most functions since it relies on cloud-based AI processing. Basic voice recognition may work offline, but meaningful responses and integrations require connectivity.

Will using Copilot affect my Samsung Galaxy's battery life significantly?

Battery impact is generally minimal during normal usage. The app uses standard background processing similar to other digital assistants. Heavy usage with frequent voice interactions may increase battery consumption moderately.

Can Copilot access and control Samsung-specific features like camera or settings?

Copilot's integration with Samsung-specific features is limited compared to Bixby. It can open apps and perform basic Android functions but cannot deeply control Samsung's proprietary features or camera modes.

Is my data secure when using Microsoft Copilot on Samsung devices?

Microsoft follows enterprise-grade security standards for Copilot data handling. Voice interactions and queries are processed according to Microsoft's privacy policy, which includes data encryption and retention policies.

The AIinASIA View: Microsoft Copilot's integration with Samsung Galaxy devices represents a pragmatic step towards AI assistant diversity. Whilst Bixby excels at device control and Samsung's ecosystem integration, Copilot shines in productivity scenarios and Microsoft service connectivity. We believe the future lies not in choosing one assistant but in seamless multi-assistant environments where each AI handles its strengths. Samsung's openness to third-party AI assistants positions Galaxy devices as flexible platforms for users seeking personalised AI experiences rather than locked ecosystems.

The integration of AI-powered digital assistants like Copilot signals a broader shift towards personalised computing experiences. As these tools become more sophisticated and contextually aware, they'll fundamentally change how we interact with our devices and manage daily tasks.

loving that copilot is making its way to android as a default assistant, especially on samsung! it's a smart move for microsoft to push it beyond just the office suite. the integration with office 365 and teams is super useful, especially for anyone juggling work on the go in singapore, like myself. iโ€™ve been using google assistant for years but the idea of having a more deeply integrated work assistant is really appealing. definitely gonna try setting this up on my s23 and see how those smart suggestions stack up against google's predictions! productivity boost, here we come!

@AIinASIA this is great and i'm thinking about trying it out. but can someone explain how copilot is supposed to handle email and calendar management without full system access? i thought android usually restricted that stuff for third-party assistants. like, will it just open the apps or actually do things inside them?

just saw this post about Copilot on Samsung phones. the idea of having email and calendar management directly through a digital assistant is a good step for integration. but it makes me wonder, how does Copilot handle privacy with all that personal info-scheduling, emails, tasks? especially with it being a default app that might have deeper access. as a UX researcher, I'd want to know more about the user controls for data sharing and how transparently that's communicated to people when they're first setting it up. is it clear what data it's accessing and how it's being used for those smart suggestions?

Right, so the power button long-press is still Bixby's domain, even with Copilot integrated. It's a bit of a faff, isn't it, having to rebind a double-press for something that should just work out of the box with your chosen assistant. Feels like a missed opportunity for a truly seamless user experience.

@techethicswatch So we're giving Copilot deep access to our email, calendars, and routines now too, beyond just web browsing. i wonder where all that user data ends up, and specifically, who exactly is seeing it and how it's being used to "improve" the AI. the article doesn't really touch on that.
